Juneteenth: A Day of Emancipation and Celebration

First Celebrated in 1865

A Holiday for All

Juneteenth, a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It has been celebrated by African Americans since 1865, the year that the last enslaved people in the Confederate states were finally freed.

Juneteenth is a day of emancipation and celebration. It is a day to remember the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom, and to celebrate the progress that has been made.

Juneteenth is also a day to reflect on the work that still needs to be done to achieve racial justice in the United States. Despite the progress that has been made, African Americans continue to face discrimination and inequality in many areas of life.

Juneteenth is a reminder that the fight for freedom is not over. It is a day to recommit ourselves to the work of building a more just and equitable society for all.
